The cost of internet specialty companies is outrageous, but with all there is to learn it seems as if there's no choice but to dole out the cash and hope that you'll get what you asked for.

Search engine optimization is just like anything else. Simply taking the time to understand how the systems work and apply them in a way that will benefit your site is all you need. The right direction and training materials are important as well.
The thing you need to understand about search engine optimization is that the companies that charge you an arm and a leg for their services don't want you to know what they know. A website is nothing more than a program written in Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML code. There are usually one or more HTML files in a website, and index.html is always the main or home page. Understanding the language and knowing how to insert code that makes your site shine is the key to a successful website.
Keyword insertion is also very important to having your page spidered, which will give you a higher page rank, and more traffic. Say, for instance, the title of one of the main landing pages in your website is, "Home Business". There are literally dozens of ways you can mix these two words in with others to create a set of pages that are directly related to those words, and insert them into your site. There are programs, (which those web optimization guys don't want you to know about either) which can actually spit out thousands of keyword phrases by entering a couple of words and hitting a button.
