I'm frequently asked by people with businesses why they aren't getting any traffic from Google. Then when I look at their website, every page title says "Bob's House of Widgets" or something similar. That would be fine if they only wanted to be found in the search engines when people search for "Bob's Widget House". That, however, is usually not what people are looking for. People are actually looking for "Green Widgets", "Blue Widget Part Number X43790" or "Widget Suppliers". The search engines may not know they fit this category because they haven't told them - In the Title Bar!
The absolute most important meta tag on your website is the title tag. A title tag will look like this in the code: < title>Fix Your Title Tags for More Search Engine Traffic< /title>. (You will need to remove the spaces.) This tag tells your browser to display the title of your page in the title bar of your web browser.
You can view the source code of any web page by clicking "View" and then "Source" of your web browser menu. The Firefox web browser make this easy to do and very much easier to read than MS Internet Explorer. If you don't have Firefox, and you should, you can get it Directly from Google.
Do a little experiment. Pick your favorite search engine, it doesn't matter which one, and search for something. Anything. (For an example try searching for the term "Green Apples") What ever it is you search for, you will find those words or combination of those words in the title of the search engine result pages (Also known as SERPs).
This is important: If your page title does not reflect what the page is about or what you want people to find you for, you can pretty much be assured you will NOT appear in the search engines.
Know and understand what you want people to find you for and incorporate those search phrases in your web page titles. Always use a page title that is unique for every page of your website and be sure it describes what you want seen when people use search the search engines.
