Search engine optimization has become more and more competitive. There is a greater number of web pages indexed by the search engines and more webmasters these days are schooled on the fundamentals of search engine optimization in driving website traffic to their pages through search engine rank. There was once a time when the words search engine optimization, to most webmasters, meant nothing more than adding some keywords to your Meta tags and description. Anyone that knew more than this literally had prominent ranking on search engines all to themselves. It didn’t matter how competitive the keywords were. Most webmasters knew very little about SEO practices for rank and website traffic so those knowing even the slightest benefited greatly.
Things are more complicated these days. More people are competing for keywords and keyword phrases. There has been an influx online of new start up businesses and websites, all vying for website traffic, all utilizing search engine optimization tricks. The search engines themselves have caught on to many deceitful search engine optimization tricks and are constantly defending against spamming to rank higher for website traffic.
Search engine optimization has obviously evolved and with that webmasters need to evolve their goals as well. Many webmasters still mistakenly look towards search engine optimization with the idea that they will rule Google and Yahoo for their keyword of choice. This is incredibly naive and really doesn’t serve the bottom line well at all. While search engine rank is an important part of search engine optimization, the goal shouldn’t be to be number one. Focus should be on getting highly targeted website traffic to your site and converting these visitors to customers. Granted, a prominent search engine rank most likely brings you more highly targeted website traffic and increased sales but not every SEO trick will take you to number one. It’s incredibly shortsighted to think this. It’s time to erase these misconceptions about search engine optimization only being successful if you get to number one in search engine results. Instead focus on writing content and copy that convinces the website traffic that does find your site to become customers and return visitors. Most importantly don’t sacrifice quality and readability for excessive keyword usage, thinking this search engine optimization tactic alone will take you to number one on Google. It may in fact do more harm than good with search engines being in more of a policing mode than ever before.
